- Title
- Efficacy of Astragalus membranaceus membranaceus (Huang Qi) for cancer-related fatigue:A meta-analysis
- Review Question
- To evaluate the effect of Astragalus membranaceus on fatigue and quality of life in patients with cancer-related fatigue.
- Study Type Included
- Include clinical randomised controlled trials (RCTs), blinded or not, regardless of publication type and language.
- Condition Being Studied
- According to the American Cancer Society 2020, the number of cancer survivors is steadily increasing.During the active treatment of these cancer survivors, 60-100% of patients experience cancer-related fatigue (CRF) , which has been identified as the most common and distressing complication compared to other symptoms and continues throughout the cancer patient's life cycle.Due to the complexity of the pathogenesis of the disease, there is no clear drug treatment option. The US National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN) Clinical Guidelines for the treatment of cancer-related fatigue recommends non-pharmacological treatments, such as exercise interventions, sleep therapy, and nutritional supplementation support, as the first choice recommendations for the intervention of patients with cancer-related fatigue. In recent years, the NCCN as well as the Society of Integrative Oncology (SIO) have also recommended that patients with CRF manage symptoms associated with the disease and treatment by adding nutritional supplements, and suggested that some herbal supplements, such as ginseng and Astragalus membranaceus may be helpful in CRF.Astragalus membranaceus polysaccharide (PG2) injection is now also approved as a type of drug therapy for the treatment of cancer-related fatigue in Taiwan patients with advanced cancer.
- Participant
- Based on the principles of PICOS, the inclusion criteria are as follows. ①Study population (population, P): patients with pathologically diagnosed malignant tumours, assessed by the 10th revision of the International Classification of Diseases (ICD-10) criteria or scale for cancer-related fatigue, without restriction on age, gender, race, tumour type, cancer severity, cancer duration and fatigue. ②Intervention (intervention, I): the trial group administered a single selection of Astragalus membranaceus or Astragalus membranaceus extractions, without restriction of Astragalus membranaceus type, dose, duration of treatment, and usage. ③Control group (comparison, C): conventional treatment, placebo or other therapeutic measures, the trial group must be consistent with the control group if combined with other therapies. ④Outcome indicators (outcome, O): primary outcome indicators are CRF and quality of life; secondary outcome indicators include pain, anxiety, depression, laboratory indicators, adverse events, etc. ⑤Study design (study design, S): include clinical randomised controlled trials (RCTs), blinded or not, regardless of publication type and language. Exclusion criteria ① Astragalus membranaceus was used in combination with other types of herbs or ingredients; ② duplicate publications; ③ missing primary information or incomplete reported data and unsuccessful contact with authors; ④ incorrect data processing and analysis.
