- Title
- A network meta-analysis of effects of acupuncture and moxibustion on breast cancer-related lymphedema
- Review Question
- What are the effects of acupuncture and moxibustion on breast cancer related lymphedema? P: Patients were women with lymphedema as a result of surgery, chemotherapy, and/or radiation for breast cancer. There were no restrictions on participants' breast cancer stage, lymphedema grade, age, or country. I: The treatment group was treated with acupuncture and/or moxibustion without restriction of manipulation techniques. Acupuncture includes filiform needle, laser acupuncture or electroacupuncture. Only burning Artemisia vulgaris was allowed in moxibustion treatment, and no other herbs were allowed. C: The treatment group was treated with acupuncture and/or moxibustion without restriction of manipulation techniques. Acupuncture includes filiform needle, laser acupuncture or electroacupuncture. Only burning Artemisia vulgaris was allowed in moxibustion treatment, and no other herbs were allowed. O: The primary outcome of the study was the improvement in the degree of edema, which was assessed by measuring the circumference of the arm. The secondary outcomes included Visual Analog Score (VAS) for swelling/ pain, and the incidences of adverse events related to AM (such as pain, scalding, local infection, coughing). S: Only randomized controlled trials (RCTs) will be included.

- Condition Being Studied
- Breast cancer is one of the most common malignant tumors in women, and the incidence of breast cancer is also increasing worldwide. At present, the treatment for breast cancer is a comprehensive treatment based on surgery, but many complications often occur after breast cancer surgery, among which, the upper limb lymphedema (BCRL) after breast cancer surgery is one of the common complications. BCRL can cause upper limb swelling, fatigue and pain, and even lead to upper limb dysfunction, seriously affecting the quality of life of patients. Therefore, it is particularly important to reduce the degree of edema and improve the quality of life of patients. With the continuous exploration of BCRL treatment, the curative effect of traditional Chinese medicine in treating this disease is outstanding. Among them, acupuncture and moxibustion therapy has shown a good effect in alleviating the swelling of the affected limb and reducing the arm circumference of the affected limb. However, the number of existing clinical studies is small, and most of them are small sample studies. The evidence coverage is insufficient, and there is no direct comparison between different acupuncture and moxibustion therapies.
- Participant
- Patients were women with lymphedema as a result of surgery, chemotherapy, and/or radiation for breast cancer. There were no restrictions on participants' breast cancer stage, lymphedema grade, age, or country.

- Human Disease Modelled
- Intervention
- The treatment group was treated with acupuncture and/or moxibustion without restrictionof manipulation techniques. Acupuncture includes filiform needle, laser acupuncture or electroacupuncture. Only burning Artemisia vulgaris was allowed in moxibustion treatment, and no other herbs were allowed.
- Comparator Control
- The control group could receive any treatments except acupuncture or moxibustion(Such as drug therapy, physical therapy, placebo- acupuncture).
- Main Outcome
- The primary outcome of the study was the improvement in the degree of edema, which was assessed by measuring the circumference of the arm. Measures of effect Number of clinically effective cases; The degree of reduction in arm circumference (expressed in cm).
- Outcome Measure
- Additional Outcome
- The secondary outcomes included Visual Analog Score (VAS) for swelling/ pain, and the incidences of adverse events related to AM (such as pain, scalding, local infection, coughing). Measures of effect A reduction in pain or swelling scores; Times of adverse events
