Naoshuantong capsule for ischemic stroke:A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis
Review Question
To determine the efficacy and safety of Naoshuantong capsule in the treatment of ischemic stroke (IS).
Study Type Included
Randomized controlled trials.
Condition Being Studied
Stroke is the second leading cause of death and the third leading cause of death and disability worldwide, with 12.2 million stroke events and 6.55 million deaths in 2019, with ischemic stroke being the most common type of stroke globally. Naoshuantong capsule is a compound prescription formulated according to the meridian theory of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) and is approved by the State Food and Drug Administration of China for the treatment of ischemic stroke. However, the safety of Naoshuantong capsule in improving neurological function, activities of daily living, clinical efficacy and complications during treatment in patients with ischemic stroke are still controversial.
Participant
Adult patients with ischemic stroke as diagnosed by guidelines.

Intervention
Naoshuantong capsule.
Comparator Control
Placebo or no intervention. Routine treatment or co-interventions will also be allowed when the routine treatment or co-interventions are administered equally to all intervention groups of a trial.
Main Outcome
Improvement of neurological impairment in acute phase assessed by National Institute of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS).
Outcome Measure
Additional Outcome
1. Activity of daily living measured with Barthel Index (BI), modified Rankin Scale(mRS) and other related scales. 2. Recurrence rate of cerebrovascular events. 3. Quality of life assessed by EuroQol Five Dimensions Questionnaire (EQ-5D), Quality of life scale for stroke (SS-QOL) and other related scales. 4. Safety outcome assessments included adverse reactions (nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, etc.) and adverse events (death, major bleeding, functional disability etc.).
