- Title
- Efficacy of Qingfei Xiaoyan Wan in the Treatment of Community-acquired Pneumonia(CAP): A Meta-Analysis
- Review Question
- Community-acquired pneumonia(CAP) is caused outside the hospital by bacteria, virus, chlamydia, mycoplasma and other microorganism. The main clinical symptoms are cough with or without sputum and chest pain.Qingfei Xiaoyan Wan has the function of relieving inflammation and cough, removing phlegm which is so suitable for the symptoms of CAP. The RCTs of Qingfei Xiaoyan Wan for the treatment of CAP are relatively abundant, which provides necessary support for the study from the perspective of statistics. And Qingfei Xiaoyan Wan was listed as first-line medicines to treat COVID-19 pandemic and was involved in some local treatment guidelines.
- Study Type Included
- Randomized controlled trials (RCTs), non-RCTs, case-control trials, cohort studies, or cross-sectional studies meet the following criteria were included: (1)studies involving experiments; (2)the patients included in the study met the diagnostic criteria for CAP and had been diagnosed by clinical observation, laboratory and imaging tests; (3)the control group was treated with antibiotics, and the experimental group was treated with Qingfei Xiaoyan pill combined with antibiotics; (4)the sample content is at least greater than 20; and (5)articles are written in Chinese or English. Articles in the form of letters, case reports, animal-based studies, reviews, commentaries, repeated and incomplete information, or cases that did not meet the criteria for confirmed CAP or those with a non-Western medicine control were excluded.
- Condition Being Studied
- Traditional Chinese medicine which cover a splendid history of thousands of years has played a significant role in the COVID-19 pandemic in China and has been trusted by people not only in China, but also in some Asian countries such as Japan and Singapore.Qingfei Xiaoyan Wan, which is obtained the main ingredients of Ma Huang and Antelope Horn, has been widely adopted by people in northern China.Community-acquired pneumonia(CAP) is caused outside the hospital by bacteria, virus, chlamydia, mycoplasma and other microorganism. The main clinical symptoms are cough with or without sputum and chest pain. CAP is the sixth leading cause of death globally. It occurs most frequently in winter and spring, accounting for about 12% of the population, and has high morbidity and mortality rates in all age groups worldwide. Qingfei Xiaoyan Wan has the function of relieving inflammation and cough, removing phlegm which is suitable for the symptoms of CAP. We want to research whether this Chinese medicine can help the treatment of CAP.
- Participant
- Animal
- Human Disease Modelled
- Intervention
- The CAP patients in the control group were treated with traditional antibiotics, and the CAP patients in the experimental group were treated with Qingfei Xiaoyan pills combined with traditional antibiotics. Patients were enrolled if they had clinically confirmed CAP and no other diseases unrelated to CAP.
- Comparator Control
- The control group of this study was treated with traditional antibiotics, including cephalosporin, moxifloxacin, and azithromycin. The effect of specific antibiotics on the results of this study will be further studied in subgroup analysis. The experimental group was treated with Qingfei Xiaoyan pill combined with traditional antibiotics. There were no significant differences in sex, age, and number of persons between the two groups as far as possible.
- Main Outcome
- Qingfei Xiaoyan Wan was predicted to improve the clinical cure rate of CAP, which was obtained by extracting the literature included in this study. The study also plans to compare the biochemical indicators between the control group using traditional anti-inflammatory drugs and the experimental group using Qingfei Xiaoyan Wan for continuous analysis, so as to obtain more theoretical basis for the possible improvement of clinical cure rate. Biochemical indicators included in the assessment may include C-reactive protein, white blood cells and inflammatory factors.
- Outcome Measure
- Additional Outcome
- Different types of antibiotics combined with Qingfei Xiaoyan Wan may have different therapeutic effects in the treatment of CAP. The study plans to study the possible influence of antibiotic types through subgroup analysis.
