Title
Effectiveness and safety of GuanXin ShuTong Capsule for treating coronary heart disease angina: a systematic review and meta-analysis
Review Question
In the past decade, some potentially active compounds and several herbal formulations from traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) have been employed in the treatment of coronary heart disease angina, but to date there is no systematic report on the effect of Chinese medicine(GuanXin ShuTong Capsule) on treating coronary heart disease angina. Through literature review, we found that many studies have evaluated the effectiveness and safety of GuanXin ShuTong Capsule on treating coronary heart disease angina, but the results are controversial. Therefore we conduct this meta-analysis to evaluate the effectiveness and safety of GuanXin ShuTong Capsule for treating coronary heart disease angina, and serves as a reference for clinical treatment.
Study Type Included
Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) of the efficacy of GuanXin ShuTong Capsule in combination with western medicine treatment versus western medicine treatment for coronary heart disease angina, regardless of blinding
Condition Being Studied
Recent research has shown that cardiovascular disease is the number one cause of death throughout the world (World Health Organization, 2016). Of those who die annually of cardiovascular disease, 7.4 million die of ischemic heart disease. Angina pectoris (AP) is a common coronary heart disease manifest by a series of clinic syndromes: diffuse atherosclerosis results in long-term severe chest pain, poor efficacy of nitrates and can deteriorate into acute myocardial infarction (AMI) or sudden death. Beta blockers, organic nitrates, antiplatelet drugs and antithrombotic are conventional Western Medicine treatments for AP. These drugs possess powerful effects, however, they also can cause antithrombotic complications, decreased heart rate or blood pressure, and several other hemodynamic changes. In recent years, Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) has been widely used to treat AP. It has been hypothesized that TCM could be used in the prevention of cardiovascular disease as a complementary and alternative intervention. Research also indicates that TCM might be help compensate for the deficiencies of Western Medicine in the treatment of AP. GuanXin ShuTong Capsule are one of the primary cardiovascular disease treatments in Traditional Chinese medicine.
Participant
Men and women of all ages who met at least one of the accepted diagnostic criteria for AP, regardless of nationality or ethnicity
Animal
Human Disease Modelled
Intervention
The intervention groups were treated with Western medicine on the same basis as the control group, but in combination with GuanXin ShuTong Capsule (produced by Shaanxi Buchang Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd, Oral administration. Three capsules at a time, three times a day)
Comparator Control
The control groups were treated with western medicine alone treatment
Main Outcome
The primary outcomes were the angina pectoris total effective rate and the total effectiveness rate of ECG, etc. Measures of effect Follow-up time spans several weeks to several months in patients.
Outcome Measure
Additional Outcome
Other clinical prognostic indexes such as the improvement of the total time of 24h general ischemia, the ST-segment depression amplitude, the duration of angina pectoris attack, the angina pectoris attack every week, the consumption of nitroglycerin every week, the adverse drug reactions (ADRs) or adverse drug events (ADEs), all-cause mortality, cardiac mortality and cardiovascular events, etc. Measures of effect Follow-up time spans several weeks to several months in patients.
Study Method
