- Title
- Gushukang capsule in the treatment of osteoporosis: a systematic review of randomized controlled trials
- Review Question
- The Gushukang Capsule is composed of Epimedium, Radix Rehmanniae Preparata, Rhizoma Drynariae, Radix Astragali, Salvia Miltiorrhizae, etc. Its main function is to invigorate the kidney and qi, to promote blood circulation and strengthen bones, which can significantly prevent and treat osteoporosis. The number of clinical trials related to Gushukang Capsule for osteoporosis is increasing every year; however, these have not been fully summarized according to the latest evidence. Therefore, we conducted an updated meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials to evaluate the efficacy of Gushukang Capsule in patients with osteoporosis, to provide reference for clinical practice and scientific research.
- Study Type Included
- All included studies were RCTs, and not restricted by publication. Cross-sectional studies, animal experiments, systematic reviews and meta-analyses, disease guidelines and reviews, and studies for which we did not have access to the full texts were excluded.
- Condition Being Studied
- This study will provide some research and practice insights, and offer a preliminary summary of the effect of Gushukang Capsule to help further understand the benefits on the health and well-being of older adults. First, this study reviewed whether Gushukang Capsule might have a positive effect on improving BMD, relieving pain symptoms, as well asclinical symptoms in osteoporosis patients. Through our preliminary exploration, we hope to have more sufficient evidence to show that Gushukang Capsule is an effective and safe for osteoporosis patients.
- Participant
- We have focused on the effect of Gushukang Capsule on bone mass in this review. First of all, the disease we are concerned about is osteoporosis, and the clinical diagnosis should conform to recognized international standards. In WHO: the subject's bone mineral density (BMD), T-score ≤ -2.5 can be defined as osteoporosis. osteoporosis includes three categories, primary osteoporosis, secondary osteoporosis, and idiopathic osteoporosis, we searched for all types of osteoporosis. When we screen the studies, we also find that some studies mention diabetic osteoporosis and psoriatic osteoporosis. After discussion, we thought that these situations should not be included in this study.

- Human Disease Modelled
- Intervention
- In order to evaluate the effect of the independent treatment, we only included the studies in which the intervention method was only Gushukang Capsule when selecting the studies. In addition, we also take another situation into account, that is, when the control group was the basic treatment methods of osteoporosis, such as taking Calcium Carbonate Chewable D3 tablet, et al, the intervention group was the basic treatment combined with Gushukang Capsule. In this case, the effect of Gushukang Capsule could also be independently observed. At the same time, we have no restrictions on the medication frequency and intervention time.
- Comparator Control
- In the control group, we include only two cases: A) no treatment; B) guideline-recommended routine treatments or internationally recognized treatments. Other combined treatments or alternative treatments are excluded because it’s impossible to determine whether Gushukang Capsule played an independent role, such as drugs that had not been verified for efficacy, including Chinese herbal decoctions, Chinese herbal medicated meals, etc.
- Main Outcome
- Bone mineral density (BMD) in patients with osteoporosis was the primary outcome we observed.
- Outcome Measure
- Additional Outcome
- Additional outcomes included changes in VAS (visual analogue scale), and etc.
