Title
Comparative effectiveness of Chinese patent medicine for diabetic retinopathy: A systematic review and network meta-analysis
Review Question
Which Chinese patent medicine has better clinical effect in treating diabetic retinopathy?
Study Type Included
We will include randomized controlled trials to assess the beneficial effects of the treatments.
Condition Being Studied
Diabetic retinopathy is a microvascular disorder occurring due to long term effects of diabetes, leading to vision-threatening damage to the retina, eventually leading to blindness. Currently, vascular endothelial growth factor, laser photocoagulation, and intravitreal steroids are the mainstays for DR treatment, but the efficacy of these treatment strategies remains insufficient. Clinical studies have found that Chinese patent medicine is effective in the treatment of diabetic retinopathy.
Participant
Studies were considered eligible for inclusion if the following criteria were met: (1) Randomized controlled trial (RCT) regarding Chinese patent medicine (Compound Danshen Dripping Pills, Qiming Granule, Compound Xueshuantong Capsule) combined with WM (such as calcium dobesilate, anti-hyperglycemia treatment) for the treatment of diabetic retinopathy, regardless of whether blinding methods were used. (2) All included patients were diagnosed with diabetic retinopathy according to specific diagnostic criteria, with no limitations in age, sex, race or disease severity. (3) All patients received treatment with WM. On the basis of this, the experimental group received one of the included Chinese patent medicine, and the control group received another or only WM. Furthermore, if there were complications during the therapeutic process, relevant therapy would be adopted. (4) Outcomes included the vision, macular thickness, plaque area, blood glucose, inflamm atory factor levels and adverse reactions. Studies were excluded if any of the following criteria were met: ① A lack of complete or precise data or the full text was not available. ② For studies with the same data, utilized the data of the study with the larger sample size and more relative complete information. ③ The course of treatment was ambiguous.
