- Cardiovascular diseases are the most common types of Non-communicable disease that greatest fraction of deaths is attributed to them. the numbers of death from cardiovascular diseases were 17•8 million deaths and YLLs from cardiovascular diseases was 330172•6 per 100000 in 2017.

- Inclusion: patients with Cardiovascular disease, heart arrest, cardiac arrest, acute coronary events or myocardial infarction.

- Opium is a substance extracted from the opium poppyits. Deaths from substance use disorders for both men and women have risen significantly in the recent years.Opium abuse is the major public health problem in all societies , where it is considered the most common drug abuse. In some societies especially in Asia and Middle East, there is a belief that opium consumption has a preventive effect against cardiovascular diseases, hypertension and diabetes.
- Comparator Control
- A group of healthy people with or without exposure to opium in case control studies. Healthy people unexposed to opium at the begining in cohort studies.
- Main Outcome
- cardiovascular diseases. CVD was defined using ICD-9 codes and Current Procedural Terminology codes for cardiovascular revascularization procedures. CVD diagnoses included hypertensive heart disease, myocardial infarction, ischemic heart disease, diseases of pulmonary circulation and ‘other’ heart disease. Measures of effect Odds ratio or risk ratio for the relation between exposure to opium and cardiovascular events.
