- Title
- Efficacy and Safety of Schisandra fruits for viral hepatitis : a systematic review and meta-analysis
- Review Question
- The study is intended to efficacy and safety of the application of Schisandra, the raw materials solely, Chinese patent medicine containing schisandra and its combination with western medicine in patients with viral hepatitis systematically.
- Study Type Included
- Randomized controlled trials
- Condition Being Studied
- Viral hepatitis is a global public-health challenge. According to the statistics, hepatitis and cirrhosis caused by hepatitis and acute infections cause 1.4 million deaths each year, mainly HBV, accounting for 55%. China is in the high incidence area of viral hepatitis, in which there were 20 million chronic hepatitis patients, and about 1.2 million developed cirrhosis and even liver cancer in 2018. Among them, hepatitis B, the largest proportion, accounts for about 80.5%, and hepatitis E, the smallest proportion, accounts for about 1.6%. At present, the main treatments of western medicine include taking antiviral drugs and injecting vaccines, but there are certain side effects such as poor drug resistance.
- Participant
- Participants in all trials received a diagnosis of viral hepatitis in accordance with diagnostic criteria as described in the guidelines, regardless of age, race, gender and the presence of other concomitant disease.
- Animal
- Human Disease Modelled
- Intervention
- Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) intervention therapies which included only Schisandra, Chinese patent medicine containing Schisandra with the total composition of medicinal flavors not exceeding four flavors, and integrated Chinese and modern conventional western medicine, were given to patients in treatment groups.
- Comparator Control
- Patients in control groups were given placebo, blank or corresponding modern western conventional drugs.
- Main Outcome
- A. The overall efficacy B. Liver biochemistry and function, such as Alanine aminotransferase (ALT), aspartate aminotransferase (AST). C. The virologic response D. Indicators of the histologic changes in liver biopsies, such as the level of Hyaluronic acid (HA), laminin (LN), procollagen iii (HPC iii), collagen IV (IV-Col) Measures of effect relative risks(RR), weighted mean difference(WMD), standard mean difference(SMD)
