Title
Moxibustion for the treatment of hypertension: a systematic review and meta-analysis
Review Question
To explore the clinical effectiveness of moxibustion for treating hypertension.
Study Type Included
We will include randomised trials to assess the beneficial effects of the treatments, and will supplement these with observational studies (including cohort and case-control studies) for the assessment of harms.
Condition Being Studied
Hypertension is a risk factor affecting the occurrence and prognosis of cardiovascular events. It is often one of the causes and inducing factors for myocardial infarction, cardiac insufficiency, stroke and severe cerebral and cerebrovascular diseases.  Antihypertensive drugs used to treat the condition, however, can cause side effects including liver and kidney damage. Moxibustion, the important component of clinical therapeutics of traditional Chinese medicine, has a reliable efficacy and unique advantages for the treatment of high blood pressure by virtue of its effects of warming meridians and stimulating acupuncture points.
Participant
Participants aged 18 years or over with a diagnosis of hypertension according to the hypertension guidelines from the American Heart Association.
Animal
Human Disease Modelled
Intervention
Moxibustion. Moxibustion is a traditional Chinese method of acupuncture treatment, which utilizes the heat generated by burning herbal preparations containing the plant Artemisia vulgaris (it is also called Mugwort or Moxa).  With its extensive application scope and convenient operation, moxibustion is used widely in China and other Asian countries to treat diseases. The form of moxibustion includes direct moxibustion, indirect moxibustion, heat-sensitive moxibustion, moxa burner moxibustion, warm needling or natural moxibustion, etc.  Studies using moxibustion as the main treatment method will be included.  Studies in which moxibustion is used as an adjuvant therapy will be excluded.
Comparator Control
The intervention in the control group may include a placebo, no treatment or other conventional treatments that are currently accepted and widely used for patients. Other herbal medicines or complementary medicines will not be accepted as a control intervention.
Main Outcome
