Title
Protease Inhibitor Exposure and Risk of Diabetes Mellitus, Gestational Diabetes and Pre-diabetes Among Treated HIV Seropositive Patients: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis
Review Question
What is the association between use of protease inhibitor and risk of diabetes, gestational diabetes and pre-diabetes among HIV sero-positive patients
Study Type Included
case-control and cohort studies
Condition Being Studied
Diabetes: A heterogeneous group of disorders characterized by hyperglycemia and glucose intolerance; Gestational diabetes: Diabetes mellitus induced by pregnancy but resolved at the end of pregnancy. It does not include previously diagnosed diabetics who become pregnant Gestational diabetes usually develops in late pregnancy when insulin antagonistic hormones peaks leading to insulin resistance, glucose intolerance and hyperglycemia.
Participant
Studies that with samples of HIV AIDS population
Animal
Human Disease Modelled
Intervention
Anti-retroviral medication belonging to the protease inhibitor class
Comparator Control
Non-exposed control group or Those exposed to other class of anti-retroviral therapy
Main Outcome
Diabetes incidence among HIV/AIDS patients treated with Protease Inhibitors. Measured based on change in baseline oral glucose oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT), blood glucose level, fasting blood glucose tests and Glycated hemoglobin (A1C) Measures of effect Time to diabetes development; odds of developing diabetes and risk of developing diabetes
Outcome Measure
Additional Outcome
Diabetes incidence among pregnant HIV/AIDS patients treated with Protease Inhibitor.Measured based on change in baseline oral glucose oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT), blood glucose level, fasting blood glucose tests and Glycated hemoglobin (A1C) Measures of effect Time to diabetes development; odds of developing diabetes and risk of developing diabetes
Study Method
