Review Question
Are aconitum-containing traditional Chinese medicines Chuanwu (Aconiti Radix Cocta), Caowu (Aconiti Kusnezoffii Radix Cocta) and Fuzi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix praeparata) effective for pain relieving?
Study Type Included
We will include clinical trials with control groups irrespective of design.
Condition Being Studied
There are there types of aconitum-containing traditional Chinese medicines in Chinese Pharmacopoeia. They are Chuanwu (Aconiti Radix Cocta), Caowu (Aconiti Kusnezoffii Radix Cocta) and Fuzi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix praeparata). They have long been used for treating pain and sensation of chill in China. They should be used with caution in view of their potential toxicity. There are some controversies about using aconitum-containing medicines. Sometimes, it is hard to weigh pros and cons. We conduct this systematic review to explore the analgesic effect of those aconitum-containing medicines.
Participant
Patients suffering from pain regardless of the diagnosis.

Intervention
All types of preparations containing Chuanwu (Aconiti Radix Cocta), Caowu (Aconiti Kusnezoffii Radix Cocta) or Fuzi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix praeparata) will be included. Chuanwu (Aconiti Radix Cocta), Caowu (Aconiti Kusnezoffii Radix Cocta) or Fuzi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix praeparata) is required to be the main medicine in the formula according to the rule of traditional Chinese medicine. Both orally taken and external use will be accepted. The courses of treatment should be no less than 7 days.
Comparator Control
The control group should be placebo, Western medicine, no intervention or other therapy without Chuanwu (Aconiti Radix Cocta), Caowu (Aconiti Kusnezoffii Radix Cocta) or Fuzi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix praeparata).
Main Outcome
Pain. Measures of effect The assessment with scales is required. The composite outcome reports will be excluded.

Additional Outcome
Sensation of chill, adverse events and quality of life. Measures of effect The assessment with scales is required. The composite outcome reports will be excluded.
