- Title
- Efficacy of peppermint on nausea and vomiting: a systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials
- Review Question
- Is peppermint effective in the treatment of nausea and vomiting symptoms in adults compared to placebo, standard treatment or no treatment?
- Study Type Included
- Randomized controlled and controlled clinical trials will be included.
- Condition Being Studied
- Investigating the efficacy of peppermint on the severity of postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV), chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting (CINV), or nausea and vomiting during pregnancy. PONV is a common side effect following surgery, and CINV is a common adverse effect among cancer patients. Nausea and vomiting not only impact the quality of life but also the treatment outcomes. Nausea and vomiting during pregnancy involve increased health risks for the pregnant women and the fetus. Current pharmaceutical treatments for nausea and vomiting are not always effective or have unpleasant adverse effects. Also, during pregnancy, the possible treatment options are limited. Medicinal herbs could be alternative options for treating the symptoms as they are inexpensive, non‐invasive, and have low levels of adverse effects compared to standard pharmacological treatments. One alternative option could be peppermint oil as it could lower the symptoms of nausea and vomiting by acting on the 5-HT(3) (5-hydroxytryptamine-3) receptor. Although peppermint is a well-known medicinal herb, its clinical effectiveness is not known for the treatment of nausea and vomiting symptoms.
