本品呈扁球形，高1～2cm，直径1.5～6.5cm。表面类白色或淡棕色，较光滑，顶端有凹陷的茎痕，周围有麻点状根痕，有的块茎周边有小扁球状侧芽。质坚硬，不易破碎，断面不平坦，白色，粉性。气微辛，味麻辣。

检查

水分不得过15.0%（通则0832第二法）。总灰分不得过5.0%（通则2302）。

注意

孕妇慎用；生品内服宜慎。

炮制

生天南星除去杂质，洗净，干燥。

贮藏

置通风干燥处，防霉、防蛀。

鉴别

（1）本品粉末类白色。淀粉粒以单粒为主，圆球形或长圆形，直径2～17μm，脐点点状、裂缝状，大粒层纹隐约可见；复粒少数，由2～12分粒组成。草酸钙针晶散在或成束存在于黏液细胞中，长63～131μm。草酸钙方晶多见于导管旁的薄壁细胞中，直径3～20μm。（2）取本品粉末5g，加60%乙醇50ml，超声处理45分钟，滤过，滤液置水浴上挥尽乙醇，加于AB-8型大孔吸附树脂柱（内径为1cm，柱高为10cm）上，以水50ml洗脱，弃去水液，再用30%乙醇50ml洗脱，收集洗脱液，蒸干，残渣加乙醇1ml使溶解，离心，取上清液作为供试品溶液。另取天南星对照药材5g，同法制成对照药材溶液。照薄层色谱法（通则0502）试验，吸取上述两种溶液各6μl，分别点于同一硅胶G薄层板上，以乙醇-吡啶-浓氨试液-水（8∶3∶3∶2）为展开剂，展开，取出，晾干，喷以5%氢氧化钾甲醇溶液，分别置日光和紫外光灯（365nm）下检视。供试品色谱中，在与对照药材色谱相应的位置上，显相同颜色的斑点或荧光斑点。

照醇溶性浸出物测定法（通则2201）项下的热浸法测定，用稀乙醇作溶剂，不得少于9.0%。
