本品为宽丝状，多卷折。表面黑褐色或绿褐色，类革质，较薄。气腥，味微咸。
检查
水分 不得过16.0%（通则0832第二法）。 总灰分 不得过46%（通则2302）。 重金属及有害元素 照铅、镉、砷、汞、铜测定法（通则2321原子吸收分光光度法或电感耦合等离子体质谱法）测定，铅不得过5mg/kg，镉不得过4mg/kg，汞不得过0.1mg/kg，铜不得过20mg/kg。
炮制
除去杂质，漂净，稍晾，切宽丝，晒干。
贮藏
置干燥处。
鉴别
（1）本品体厚，以水浸泡即膨胀，表面黏滑，附着透明黏液质。手捻不分层者为海带，分层者为昆布。 （2）取本品约10g，剪碎，加水200ml，浸泡数小时，滤过，滤液浓缩至约100ml。取浓缩液2～3ml，加硝酸1滴与硝酸银试液数滴，即生成黄色乳状沉淀，在氨试液中微溶解，在硝酸中不溶解。
浸出物
照醇溶性浸出物测定法（通则2201）项下的热浸法测定，用乙醇作溶剂，不得少于7.0%。
含量测定
同药材。
功能与主治
消痰软坚散结，利水消肿。用于瘿瘤，瘰疬，睾丸肿痛，痰饮水肿。
性味与归经
咸，寒。归肝、胃、肾经。
用法与用量
6～12g。
