本品呈方块状或圆柱状。棕黄色、灰棕色或棕黑色。质硬。气微腥，味苦。
贮藏
置通风干燥处，防蛀。
鉴别
（1）本品粉末淡黄棕色。薄壁细胞类圆形，充满糊化淀粉粒。草酸钙针晶束长20～90μm。螺纹导管和环纹导管直径8～60μm。 （2）取本品粉末0.2g，加水5ml，振摇，滤过，取滤液2ml置试管中，加新制的糠醛溶液（1→100）0.5ml，沿管壁加硫酸2ml，两液接界处即显棕红色环。
功能与主治
清热化痰，息风定惊。用于痰热咳嗽，咯痰黄稠，中风痰迷，癫狂惊痫。
性味与归经
苦、微辛，凉。归肺、肝、脾经。
用法与用量
3～6g。
