本品为朱红色的水丸；气芳香浓郁，味辣、微苦。

取本品，置显微镜下观察：不规则块片无色透明，边缘多平直，有棱角，遇水合氯醛试液溶化（天竺黄）。草酸钙簇晶直径8～24μm，存在于类圆形薄壁细胞中（巴豆霜）。体壁碎片无色，表面有极细的菌丝体（僵蚕）。体壁碎片淡黄色至黄色，有网状纹理及圆形毛窝，有时可见棕褐色刚毛（全蝎）。不规则碎块金黄色或橙黄色，有光泽（雄黄）。不规则细小颗粒暗棕红色，有光泽，边缘暗黑色（朱砂）。
功能与主治
定惊豁痰，消积通便。用于小儿急惊风，身热，昏睡，气粗，烦躁，痰涎壅盛，停乳停食，大便秘结。
用法与用量
口服。小儿三至四个月，一次3丸；五至六个月，一次4～5丸；周岁一次6～7丸，一日1～2次；周岁以上及体实者酌加用量，或遵医嘱。
