Does enteric-coated peppermint oil improve irritable bowel syndrome symptoms? Does enteric-coated peppermint oil improve irritable bowel syndrome quality of life?
Study Type Included
Randomized placebo-controlled trials with a minimum treatment duration of two weeks.
Condition Being Studied
Irritable bowel syndrome.
Participant
Inclusion: Patients with irritable bowel syndrome as diagnosed using any of the following criteria for IBS: Manning Criteria, Rome I, II, III, IV diagnostic criteria. All ages. Organic disease excluded in order to qualify for inclusion. Exclusion: Patients having organic disease or who have not had organic disease excluded. Non-randomized trials; retrospective, cross-sectional, non-interventional trials.

Intervention
Patients with confirmed irritable bowel syndrome who were randomized to enteric-coated peppermint oil or placebo for a minimum of 2 weeks.
Comparator Control
Placebo.
Main Outcome
Proportion of patients with improvement of global symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome vs baseline after receiving oral enteric-coated peppermint oil or placebo. Measures of effect Two weeks minimum as first time point.
Outcome Measure
Additional Outcome
Abdominal pain, quality of life. Measures of effect Two weeks minimum as first time point.
