Condition Being Studied
Dental caries is the most widespread oral disease worldwide. The disease is the tenth most prevalent condition in children and affects 35% of all ages combined. Untreated dental caries may lead to pain and tooth loss. Untreated dental caries in primary dentition affects 9% of the global population. Xylitol shows prohibitive effect on the growth of streptococci mutans (MS). Its effect on the cariogenic bacteria could have a role in preventing dental caries. The effectiveness of xylitol toothpaste on preventing dental caries is not clearly confirmed. There is no clear agreement on the amount of xylitol in toothpaste for caries prevention. The study aims to evaluate the available evidence on the effectiveness of xylitol toothpaste in prevention of dental caries, in terms of reducing dental caries increment and MS level in plaque or saliva.IN
Participant
Inclusion criteria were as follow: Randomized or controlled clinical trial involving human subjects of all age. Studies evaluating the effect of xylitol-containing toothpaste for dental caries prevention. Studies that provided original data generated by means of a comparative trial design.

Only using xylitol-containing toothpaste to brush teeth
Comparator Control
Only using other non-xylitol toothpaste or placebo toothpaste to brush teeth
Main Outcome
Dental caries increments in terms of the decayed, missing, filled surfaces/teeth indexes, S. mutans level in plaque or saliva. Measures of effect Time for dental caries increments should be at least one year study period. Time for S. mutans level should be at least one month study period.
