Title
A systematic review and meta-analysis to compare caries preventing and remineralising potential of combined therapy using a remineralising agent (CPP-ACP/ Bioactive Glass or NOVAMin/ Ozone/ Xylitol) and topical fluoride versus topical fluoride alone
Review Question
Population: Human subjects with incipient lesions/cavitated/non-cavitated lesions. Intervention: Remineralizing agent (CPP-ACP/Bioactive glass/ Ozone/ Xylitol) and Topical Fluoride Control: Topical Fluoride alone Outcome: Remineralization potential (laser fluorescence readings); Caries preventive effect (caries increment & S mutans Count) Studies: Randomized controlled trials
Study Type Included
Randomised controlled trials
Condition Being Studied
The progression or reversal of dental caries depends on to which side the equilibrium between demineralization-remineralization shifts. Pathological factors like presence of cariogenic bacteria, fermentable carbohydrates and salivary dysfunction promotes tooth demineralization. On the other hand, protective factors like administration of antibacterial agents, presence of sufficient saliva and remineralizing ions promotes tooth remineralization. The principles of minimally invasive dentistry advocates the use of clinically effective measures to remineralize lesions at an early stage. While fluoride-mediated remineralization is the cornerstone of current caries management regimens, a number of new remineralization agents have been commercialized in order to promote deeper remineralization of lesions and thus facilitating caries control over a lifetime. Clinical trials assessing the effectiveness of combined use of CPP-ACP/ Xylitol/ Ozone/ Bioactive glass and topical fluoride have been reported but with no conclusive evidence.
Participant
Humans with fully erupted primary and/or permanent dentition.
