- Title
- Xylitol use during pregnancy and lactation to prevent early childhood caries
- Review Question
- Xylitol use during pregnancy and lactation for preventing Early Childhood Caries. Objective: To assess benefit and harm of xylitol use during pregnancy and lactation for preventing Early Childhood Caries.
- Study Type Included
- We will include published and unpublished randomized controlled trials. We will not include cluster, cross over trials and quasi random trials.
- Condition Being Studied
- Early childhood caries (ECC) is a particularly virulent form of dental caries that is characterized by an overwhelming infectious challenge and is associated with unusual dietary practices. ECC is defined as “the presence of one or more decayed (non cavitated or cavitated lesions), missing teeth (due to caries), or filled tooth surfaces in any primary tooth in a child of 72 months of age or younger. ECC is multi-factorial, and is the result of a time-specific interaction of microorganisms mainly Streptococcus mutans (S.mutans), teeth and fermentable carbohydrates with sugars on a tooth surface. In addition to the causal factors, the influence of social, behavioral risk factors, which often result from a generally unhealthy lifestyle have been implicated.
- Participant

- Comparator Control
- Fluoride, Chlorhexidine, Placebo, no treatment.
- Main Outcome
