Title
Systematic Review Evaluating the Effectiveness of Visual Inspection with Acetic Acid (VIA) as Compared to Primary HPV Testing and/or Pap Smear
Review Question
What is the effectiveness of visual inspection with acetic acid (VIA) as compared to primary HPV testing and/or pap smear (standard) among non-pregnant women aged 30-65 in low- and middle-income countries?
Study Type Included
Inclusion Criteria: • Other systematic reviews • Randomized trials • Other experimental studies • Observational (e.g., cohort, cross-sectional, case-control) Exclusion Criteria: • Qualitative • Case studies • Case series
Condition Being Studied
This systematic review will focus on screening outcomes of Visual Inspection with Acetic Acid compared to Primary HPV Testing and Pap smear (gold standard). These screening methods lead to additional screening and diagnoses related to HPV and cervical cancer.
Participant
Inclusion Criteria: Non-pregnant women aged 30-65 in low- and middle-income countries who received Visual Inspection with Acetic Acid (VIA) Testing, Primary HPV Testing or Pap smear. Exclusion Criteria: Pregnant women, women aged < 30, women aged > 65
Animal
Human Disease Modelled
Intervention
Inclusion Criteria: Visual Inspection with Acetic Acid (VIA), Primary HPV Testing, Pap smear (Gold Standard) Exclusion Criteria: Co-HPV Testing, Reflex HPV Testing, Diagnostic Testing
Comparator Control
Inclusion Criteria: • VIA compared to pap smear • Primary HPV testing compared to pap smear • VIA compared to primary HPV testing • Include studies comparing Visual Inspection with Lugol’s Iodine to any previously listed comparators *Pap smear as gold standard Exclusion Criteria: Co-HPV Testing, Reflex HPV Testing, Diagnostic Testing
Main Outcome
Inclusion criteria: • Sensitivity • Specificity • Prevalence • Positive predictive value • Negative predictive value • Adverse Outcomes • Yield • Likelihood ratio • Clinical Outcomes: Normal, Normal with HPV, Ascus, L-sil (Low Grade) and H-sil (High Grade) Exclusion criteria: • Crude numbers (e.g., not a rate or ratio) Measures of effect ORs, NNT, PPV, sensitivity, specificity, NPV, yield, estimates of prediction (brier scores, AUC)
