- Title
- The acceptance and effectiveness of a nurse-led visual inspection with acetic acid (VIA) screening programme for cervical cancer prevention for women in West Africa: a systematic review
- Review Question
- 1) Establish if research findings, conclusions and recommendations provide evidence for the use of VIA to scale up cervical cancer screening uptake especially in resource constrained settings/hard-to-reach communities in West Africa 2) Describe the acceptance and effectiveness of a Nurse –led VIA cervical cancer screening programme and make a case for its use to scale-up cervical cancer prevention in West Africa. 3) Identify the best practice for implementing VIA in terms of man-power utilisation and minimising harm to women
- Study Type Included
- Study design: Qualitative and quantitative study design and others but not reviews articles. Primary research that includes information on Visual inspection with acetic acid (VIA) as a screening method for the prevention of cervical cancer; studies on effectiveness, acceptability of VIA Nurse- led screening center. Others study design e.g. reviews studies like scoping, systematic study designs are excluded
- Condition Being Studied
- The unsuccessful implementation of cytology-based screening tests for the prevention of cervical cancer in resource-constrained settings had led to the use of low cost visual inspection with acetic acid (VIA) screening method in developing countries. Other cadres of health care professionals, especially nurses, are implementing this screening method. The rural women have poor access to screening for the prevention cervical cancer in most resource poor countries in West Africa including Nigeria.

- Intervention
- The studies where women are screened for the prevention of cervical cancer using the visual inspection with acetic acid (VIA) method of screening a (an approach recommended by World Health Organization for resource constraint settings. The procedure for (VIA) screening - Perform a vaginal speculum examination on an eligible women during which a health care provider will: - identify the anterior and posterior lip of the cervix, red columnar epithelium, pink squamous epithelium, the squamocolumnar junction, and the transformation zone. Observe all four vaginal fornices to make sure they are free from any growth. - Soak a clean swab in 3% to 5% acetic acid and apply to the cervix liberally - Observe for abnormal cervical tissue temporarily changes which will appear white when exposed to vinegar or acetic acid. - View the cervix with the naked eye to identify color changes on the cervix. - Determine whether the test result is positive or negative for possible precancerous lesion or cancer. - Treat depending on the outcome of this result.
- Comparator Control
- This is not applicable to the review
- Main Outcome
- Any data or information indicating quantitative and qualitative information in form of number of rural women accessing services, increased number of case identification i.e. women having cervical changes, increasing numbers of referrals to the next level of care. Cadre of health workers performing screening, eg Nurses, Community health workers. Documented harms, negative side effect of screening method. Cost effectiveness. service uptake and coverage.
