- Title
- Effectiveness of Chlorhexidine Gels and Chips in Periodontitis Patients After Scaling and Root Planing: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis
- Review Question
- How does chlorhexidine compare to other local antimicrobials as adjunctive therapy after scaling and root planing in periodontitis patients?
- Study Type Included
- Inclusion Criteria o Clinical trial studies regarding the administration of chlorhexidine with other local antimicrobials (metronidazole, tetracycline, and minocycline) after scaling and root grinding in periodontitis patients. o Publications of the last 10 years o Full paper publication in English o Studies with results in periodontal pocket depth, gingival index, and/or plaque index. o Studies with participant probing depth of at least 5 mm for periodontitis. o Studies with a follow-up duration of 30 days or 1 month. Exclusion Criteria o Studies in the form of systematic reviews, meta-analyses, animal studies, case series, and case reports. o Studies with repeated antimicrobial administration. o Studies with participants with systemic disease. o Studies with smoking participants.
- Condition Being Studied
- Periodontitis is an inflammatory disease of the supporting tissues of the teeth initiated by certain microorganisms or groups of microorganisms which will then modulate the host response and change the balance from homeostasis to dysbiosis and result in progressive destruction of the periodontal ligament and alveolar bone.
- Participant
- Periodontitis patients with a probing pocket depth of at least 5 mm, without systemic disease and non-smokers.
- Animal
- Human Disease Modelled
- Intervention
- Scaling and root planing followed by locally administered chlorhexidine.
- Comparator Control
- Scaling and root planing followed by locally administered minocycline, tetracycline, and metronidazole.
- Main Outcome
- Changes in periodontal pocket depth (PPD) from baseline to 30 days or 1 month follow-up duration. Measures of effect Mean difference analysis
- Outcome Measure
- Additional Outcome
- Change in gingival index and plaque index from baseline to 30 days or 1 month follow-up duration. Measures of effect Mean difference analysis
- Study Method
- Meta-analysis, Systematic review
