Title
Effects of moxibustion combined with Western medicine on diabetic peripheral neuropathy (DPN): a systematic review and meta-analysis
Review Question
To systematically assess the efficacy and safety of moxibustion combined with western medicine in preventing DPN.
Study Type Included
Only randomized controlled trials (RCTs) of moxibustion combined with western medicine for DPN will be included.
Condition Being Studied
Diabetic peripheral neuropathy (DPN) is one of the common chronic complication of diabetes mellitus. The main clinical performance of DPN are pain, numbness and coldness of extremities, abnormal sensation, which can easily lead to diabetic foot, foot ulcer and even amputation, causing a huge burden on public health care. Currently, the main western medicine treatment for DPN includes controlling blood glucose, repairing nerves, improving microcirculation, and antioxidant stress. While the effect of pure Western Medicine wasn't good enough. There are an increasingly number of studies on moxibustion combined with western medicine for DPN published with inconclusive results in recent years. Therefore, it is essential to conduct a systematic review and meta-analysis to assess the effect of moxibustion combined with western medicine for DPN.
Participant
Inclusion criteria: The diagnostic criteria of DPN should be met by all the participants, which are nationally or internationally recognized, such as the WHO criteria, or the American Diabetes Association (ADA) diabetes diagnostic criteria, 2009 Chinese Medical Doctor Association Guidelines for diagnosis and treatment of diabetic peripheral neuropathy and so on. Exclusion criteria: participants have Peripheral neuropathy which is not caused by diabetes.
Animal
Human Disease Modelled
Intervention
Inclusion criteria: studies using combination therapy with moxibustion and western. medicine. Moxibustion refers to a method of burning various herbal medicines such as mugwort on the human skin. Moxibustion intervention in our review includes all treatments using any type moxibustion, such as electronic moxibustion, mild moxibustion, indirect moxibustion etc. Exclusion criteria: studies where moxibustion was used as a monotherapy, or moxibustion combined with other traditional Chinese medicine treatment such as needle warming moxibustio, Foot bath and etc.
Comparator Control
The control interventions include routine treatment (e.g: Diabetes education, diet management, sport therapy, control of blood glucose, blood pressure and blood fat), placebo, or no treatment. The western medications for DPN must be identical in both experimental group and control group to make the comparison comparable.
Main Outcome
1. Proportion of patients with overall symptoms improvement. 2. Nerve conduction velocity: (motor nerve conduction velocity [MNCV] of the median nerve and peroneal nerve; sensory nerve conduction velocity [SNCV] of the median nerve and peroneal nerve). 3. Toronto Clinical Scoring System (TCSS). Measures of effect During the trial period
