- Title
- Effect of chlorhexidine combined with periodontal treatment to prevent adverse birth outcomes
- Review Question
- Does adding chlorhexidine to scaling and root planing when treating maternal periodontal disease affect birth outcomes?
- Study Type Included
- Randomized controlled trials
- Condition Being Studied
- Evidence of a beneficial effect of treating maternal periodontal disease on birth outcomes is inconclusive due to heterogeneity and risk of bias in randomized controlled trials (RCTs). One source of heterogeneity is the differences in treatment protocols. In a Cochrane review evaluating periodontal treatment in relation to preterm birth the intervention group of three RCTs included chlorhexidine mouthwash along with periodontal treatment while eight others consisted of periodontal treatment only. As chlorhexidine by itself has been shown to have a beneficial effect on birth outcomes it is plausible that it could enhance treatment effectiveness.
