Title
A systematic review of moxibustion for Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)
Review Question
Does moxibustion (with/out any other treatment) impact on Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) compared to any other treatment?
Study Type Included
We will include randomised trials to assess the beneficial effects of the treatments, and will supplement these with any types of studies (including cohort and case–control studies, case series) for the assessment of safety. When using multiple treatment methods, we exclude them from the study unless moxibustion is used as the primary treatment.
Condition Being Studied
Patients diagnosed only COPD regardless of stage.
Participant
Inclusion: COPD patients (as diagnosed using any recognised diagnostic criteria) regardless of age, sex, stage, Korean medicine pattern type. Exclusion: the patients with any other comorbidity.
Animal
Human Disease Modelled
Intervention
Moxibustion refers to a method of burning various herbal medicines such as mugwort on the human skin. Moxibustion intervention in our review includes all treatments using any type moxibustion, such as indirect moxibustion, direct moxibustion etc. In addition to moxibustion therapy alone, this study includes studies on moxibustion plus other active treatments. But moxa cones for heating acupuncture is not included.
Comparator Control
Control group using other treatments (e.g. Acupuncture, medication, herbal therapy, pharmacoacupuncture, or manual therapy vs moxibustion) or Control group using several treatments including moxibustion (e.g. Acupuncture+moxibusiton vs only Acupuncture, Acupuncture+herbal medicine+moxibusiton vs Acupuncture+herbal medicine). Both the experimental group and the control group are performed on the same COPD patients without comorbidity.
Main Outcome
1. Performance based measures of pulmonary function using spirometry (e.g. Forced expirational volume in one second (FEV1), Forced vital capacity (FVC)) 2. Patient reported outcomes
Outcome Measure
Additional Outcome
1. Scores of Quality of life and Changes of symptoms (Validated questionnaire or functional scale specific to the presenting condition) 2. Adverse events related to moxibustion or any other treatment
