Title
Influence of Vitamin D in orthodontic tooth movement - A systematic review and Meta- analysis
Review Question
Whether Vitamin D(I) will accelerate or decelerate orthodontic tooth movement(O) in adolescent or adult orthodontic patients (P) compared to the non exposed group (C) ? Will the influence of Vitamin D affect the overall orthodontic treatment time?
Study Type Included
Inclusion criteria: Prospective Randomized control trials done in humans Exclusion criteria: Retrospective studies, review articles, case reports, animal studies, in vitro studies
Condition Being Studied
Malocclusion is the domain under study and orthodontic treatment is done to correct this malocclusion. Accelerating the orthodontic tooth movement will reduce the overall treatment duration. There are multiple external agents which increases the rate of tooth movement and there are various animal studies which have stated the effect Vitamin D and it's impact in moving the teeth. In this study the potential benefit of Vitamin D in influencing the orthodontic tooth movement will be studied.
Participant
Inclusion criteria: Orthodontic adolescent or adult patients who received Vitamin D as an adjunct with orthodontic treatment Exclusion criteria: Orthodontic adolescent or adult patients who didn’t receive Vitamin D during the course of orthodontic treatment.
Animal
Human Disease Modelled
Intervention
Inclusion criteria: Vitamin D Exclusion criteria: other external agents that accelerate tooth movement.
Comparator Control
Non exposed control group
Main Outcome
Increase or decrease in the rate of orthodontic tooth movement. Measures of effect Mean and standard deviation of the rate of orthodontic tooth movement and Standard mean difference will be calculated to pool the overall effect.
Outcome Measure
Additional Outcome
Alveolar bone density, anchorage loss and root resorption Measures of effect Suitable measure to estimate the alveolar bone density, anchorage loss and root resorption
Study Method
Intervention, Prospective meta-analysis (PMA), Systematic review
