- Title
- Evaluating the Psychosocial Impact of Gender Affirming Dermatology Treatments
- Review Question
- What are the psychosocial effects of the clinical use of dermatological treatments for gender affirmation?
- Study Type Included
- Studies must be peer-reviewed, in English, and contain data on the psychosocial effects of dermatological procedures to be considered for inclusion. Any study design except for systematic reviews, opinion pieces, and commentaries will be considered for inclusion. Case studies and empirical studies will be included if there are reported changes in gender dysphoria, mental health outcomes, or quality of life outcomes.
- Condition Being Studied
- Gender Affirmation
- Participant
- Inclusion: Persons who identify/present as transgender who are seeking or have sought gender affirming treatment. Exclusion: Cis gendered individuals or persons without gender dysphoria.
- Animal
- Human Disease Modelled
- Intervention
- Dermatological interventions included will be those administered to transgender persons or persons with gender dysphoria that are intended to help achieve their transition to the desired gender, or procedures that treat conditions related to the transition. Examples of dermatological interventions that directly aid in the transition to the desired gender include face and body remodeling procedures as well as hair loss and hair removal treatments. More specifically, these include but are not limited to injectables (such as neuromodulators and filler), allogenic alopecia treatments, electrolysis, laser hair removal, body sculpting procedures, and cryolipolysis. Examples of dermatological interventions that treat conditions related to the transition are those that treat testosterone therapy induced acne, scarring from gender-affirming surgery, hormone therapy induced melasma, and dermatological conditions related to the neogenitalia. Specific examples of these include but are not limited to topical agents, antibiotics, and isotretinoin for acne; laser, light, or radiofrequency devices, as well as injectable medications for scarring; hydroquinone cream, topical retinoids or corticosteroids, or chemical peels for melasma; trichloroacetic acid, cryotherapy, or surgical excision for HPV-related skin conditions as well as other medications for dermatological conditions of the neogenitalia.
- Comparator Control
- Control groups may include persons with gender dysphoria who do not receive the dermatological intervention being studied. Comparator groups may include persons with gender dysphoria being compared to themselves pre and post treatment. Other studies included may not have comparator/control groups.
- Main Outcome
- The pre-specified main outcomes of the review include changes in gender dysphoria, satisfaction rates of the procedures, mental health outcomes, and quality of life outcomes (this includes observational changes as well as those measured by diagnostic tools, patient reported surveys, or patient reported experiences). Measures of effect We anticipate significant variability in both the timing and methods used to measure the pre-specified main outcomes.
