- Title
- Moxibustion for myelosuppression induced by chemotherapy or radiotherapy: a systematic review and meta-analysis
- Review Question
- To assess the beneficial effects and safety of moxibustion for improving the myelosuppression and immune function in chemotherapy or radiotherapy of patients.
- Study Type Included
- All randomised control trials will be included for the assessment of the benefits and harms of the moxibustion intervention.
- Condition Being Studied
- Chemotherapy or radiotherapy is an important treatment for malignant tumour, more than half of cancer patients need to receive this treatment.Chemotherapy or radiotherapy has significant efficacy in cancer, but a variety of adverse events are associated with these treatment, such as myelosuppression, gastrointestinal disorder. The previous studies have shown that moxibustion could significantly reduce side-effects caused by chemotherapy or radiotherapy. However, there is no systematic review investigate the clinical value of moxibustion in patients undergoing chemotherapy or radiotherapy for malignant tumour. Therefore, we will perform a systematic review with meta-analysis of randomized studies to evaluate the effects of moxibustion for improving the myelosuppression and immune function in postoperative chemotherapy or radiotherapy of patients with malignant tumour.
- Participant
- We included participants of any age with any type of cancer receiving chemotherapy or radiotherapy and diagnosed to suffer from myelosuppression.
- Animal
- Human Disease Modelled
- Intervention
- The intervention in the treatment group included moxibustion treatment (Exculde material is not Mugwort moxibustion treatment ), define as burning moxa on or above any acu-point. Moxibustion was used as the sole intervention or as an adjuvant therapy to another standard treatment for any type cancer myelosuppression induced by chemotherapy or radiotherapy and if the contronl group received the same concomitant treatment as the moxibustion group. We excluded trials with designs that did not allow an evaluation of efficacy of the test intervention and trials with moxibustion as concomitant treatment together with other treatments of unproven efficacy.
- Comparator Control
- The control intervention may include no treatment, placebo, or other medications.
- Main Outcome
- 1. Mortality 2. Changes in biological parameters aimed at assessing side effects of chemotherapy or radiotherapy (e.g., Peripheral blood counts, such as white blood cell counts (WBC) and neutropenia counts, etc.) Measures of effect
- Outcome Measure
- Additional Outcome
- 1. Quality of life as measured by a validated instrument, such as Karnofsky score. 2. Change of symptoms other than those addressed in the primary outcome measurements (e.g., fatigue, anorexia, nausea/vomiting, etc.) 3. Adverse events. Any adverse event, arising as a result of treatment with moxibustion that cause anaphylactic reaction; vomiting; diarrhea; or stomachache. Measures of effect
