Associations between dietary selenium intake and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease: a systematic review and meta-analysis
Review Question
Selenium is one of the necessary trace elements for human body, which plays an important role in the process of anti-oxidation and anti-inflammation. Therefore, it has been suggested that dietary supplements containing selenium should be used to improve hepatic steatosis. However, recent studies have found that dietary selenium intake is positively correlated with the prevalence of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. As there are contradictions in epidemiological studies on the relationship between selenium and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, we aim to study the above inconsistencies through systematic review and meta-analysis.
Study Type Included
The type of research design that meets the inclusion criteria should be observational because randomized controlled trials are unethical. However, all studies on inclusion should describe the relationship between selenium intake and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. Studies are excluded according to several criteria: 1) repeated articles; 2) lack of baseline information; 3) review articles; 4) animal experiments; 5) have nothing to do with the content of this study.
Condition Being Studied
Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is characterized by fat accumulation in the liver, which can range from simple steatosis to more severe nonalcoholic steatohepatitis, and may eventually progress to liver cirrhosis, which is considered to be the main cause of chronic liver disease. Selenium is one of the necessary trace elements for human body, which plays an important role in the process of anti-oxidation and anti-inflammation. Therefore, dietary supplements containing selenium have been recommended for a long time to prevent cell damage caused by free radicals. However, recent studies have found that dietary selenium intake is positively correlated with the prevalence of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. Because of the contradiction between selenium and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, we aim to study the relationship between dietary selenium supplement and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, so as to promote healthy diet.

Inclusion: 1. Dietary supplements contain selenium. 2. The end point of the study was non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. Exclusion: 1. The quality of literature is low. 2. Lack of baseline information. 3. The data is not appropriate.

We evaluated dietary selenium intake, and participants with less than a certain amount of selenium intake will be included in the non-exposed control group.
Main Outcome
The main outcome is nonalcoholic fatty liver disease. The diagnosis of NAFLD is based on imaging or histological evidence of liver steatosis, history of heavy drinking, and exclusion of all other liver diseases.
