Title
Efficacy and safety of the administration of selenium or vitamin E alone or combined administration in ICU patients: a systematic review and meta-analysis
Review Question
The aim of this meta -analysis is to evaluate the efficacy and safety of selenium alone or vitamin E alone or in combination for ICU patients.
Study Type Included
Randomized controlled trials will be included.
Condition Being Studied
The patients admitted to the intensive care unit are all kinds of critical acute diseases, such as those who need to be monitored after major surgery, anesthesia accidents, severe combined trauma, acute circulatory failure, acute respiratory failure, resuscitation after cardiac and respiratory arrest, electric shock, resuscitation after drowning, various poisoning patients, various shock patients, sepsis, amniotic fluid embolism, severe pregnancy toxemia, etc.
Participant
Patients were eligible if they were expected to be on intensive care and high dependency units for ≥48 hours, were aged ≥16 years. Pregnant women were not eligible. Patients with estimated glomerular filtration rate <10 ml/min and not receiving renal replacement therapy were also excluded.
Animal
Human Disease Modelled
Intervention
Selenium, Vitamin E, or selenium in combination with vitamin E.
Comparator Control
The control group was patients who were not given the intervention or were given placebo.
Main Outcome
1. SOFA score: It is a simple and objective score that allows for calculation of both the number and the severity of organ dysfunction in six different organs (respiratory, coagulatory, liver, cardiovascular, renal, and neurologic) ; 2. Length of stay in the ICU: It is a term introduced by the National Health Service (NHS) as the length of an inpatient hospitalization in ICU, calculated from the day when patients were admitted to the ICU to day of discharge based on the number of overnight stays; 3. Mortality. Measures of effect SOFA score and Length of stay in the ICU use RR. Mortality use SMD.
Outcome Measure
Additional Outcome
Ventilator-free days: Ventilator-free days at 28 days is an outcome that depends on organ dysfunction. It is defned in a 28 day period in critically ill patients and measured by the number of free days from mechanical ventilation to evaluate the efcacy of interventions. Measures of effect Ventilator-free days use SMD.
Study Method
Meta-analysis, Systematic review
