- Title
- Systematic review and meta-analysis on the efficacy and safety of Pilocarpine (1.25%) in presbyopia treatment
- Review Question
- How effective and safe pilocarpine 1.25% is in presbyopia management?
- Study Type Included
- To be included in review - Randomized control trials, Case series, case reports, conference presentations. Excluded - Any clinical studies that used topical pilocarpine at a concentration other than 1.25%, Review articles, Observational studies.
- Condition Being Studied
- Presbyopia is an age-related insufficiency of accommodation leading to the inability to focus clearly on near objects. This decrease in amplitude of accommodation is due to decreasing efficiency of ciliary muscles, sclerosis of the crystalline lens fibres, and changes in its capsule which reduce the spontaneous steepening of its surfaces when the ciliary muscle contracts.
- Participant
- Inclusion - Subjects with objective and subjective evidence of presbyopia, >40 years of age where pilocarpine 1.25% was used for its management. Exclusion - Concomitant use of any other topical medication.
- Animal
- Human Disease Modelled
- Intervention
- Pilocarpine 1.25% ophthalmic solution.
- Comparator Control
- In RCT - Vehicle
- Main Outcome
- Primary outcome measure - Improvement in binocular distance-corrected near visual acuity (DCNVA) measured at 40 cm, from baseline (day 1) to hour 3 on day 14 or on day 30 of pilocarpine use. The percentage of participants gaining 3 lines or more in DCNVA, without losing more than 5 letters of high contrast, binocular corrected distance visual acuity, with the same refractive correction will be taken into account.
- Outcome Measure
- Additional Outcome
- Secondary outcome measure - 1. Improvement in high-contrast, binocular distance-corrected intermediate visual acuity measured at 66cm from baseline (day 1) to hour 3 on day 14 or on day 30 of pilocarpine use. 2. Adverse events
