- Title
- The efficacy of the topical pilocarpine in adult patients with xerostomia:a quantitative review
- Review Question
- Whether topical pilocarpine can relieve the severity of xerostomia in adult patients with xerostomia? Whether topical pilocarpine can increase saliva production in adult patients with xerostomia?
- Study Type Included
- RCT
- Condition Being Studied
- Dryness of the mouth can be presented as either having a low salivary stream or a subjective sensation of a dry mouth; the former is called ‘salivary organ hypofunction’ (SGH), the latter is ‘xerostomia’. A low salivary stream is a symptom that can be measured by a clinician, while xerostomia is a subjective feeling that is perceived by the patient. Dryness of the mouth, lips, and throat falls under the category of xerostomia. Patients with xerostomia may have various symptoms, such as difficulty in chewing, swallowing, speaking, oral discomfort, and changes in taste sensation. Xerostomia is a significant health problem, affecting the quality of life for approximately 20% to 30% of the world’s population. A recent study indicated that the prevalence of xerostomia is 7% higher in females than in males. Xerostomia is 1.62 times more common in women than in men. What is more, xerostomia disproportionately affects older people, who increasingly suffer from the condition.
- Participant
- The population was defined as adult patients with xerostomia. 'Adult' was defined as a person over eighteen years old.
- Animal
- Human Disease Modelled
- Intervention
- The reviewer considered topical pilocarpine treatment to manage xerostomia, such as sprays, gels, mouthwashes, mouth rinses, lozenges and pilocarpine eye drops.
- Comparator Control
- This SR compared with a control group which carries out placebo intervention or any other intervention.
- Main Outcome
- Primary outcomes measured were as follows: The severity of xerostomia was measured by using any validated and reliable scale, such as Numeric Rating Scale (NRS), Visual Analogue Scale (VAS), Xerostomia Inventory (XI), and Likert Scale. In addition, dry mouth symptoms were also measured by using any validated and reliable questionnaire, such as the xerostomia questionnaire.
- Outcome Measure
- Additional Outcome
- Secondary outcomes measured were as follows: Saliva production was assessed by the clinically measured objective outcome, such as salivary flow rate, which was the measured outcome of the weight or volume of the unstimulated whole saliva (UWS).
