- Title
- Efficacy of oral pilocarpine or cevimiline for the treatment of dry eye in patients with Sjogren's syndrome: A systematic review and meta-analysis
- Review Question
- The purpose of this study is to explore whether oral pilocarpine or cevimiline can relieve symptoms of dry eye in patients with Sjogren's syndrome. Some studies have concluded that this treatment is effective for dry eye, while some ones hold the opposite conclusion.
- Study Type Included
- There are no restrictions on the types of study designs. Case report, case series, prospective study, retrospective study, cohort study, etc.
- Condition Being Studied
- Sjögren's syndrome (SS) is a common autoimmune disease that primarily affects exocrine glands such as the lacrimal glands. Dry eye disease is one of the most prevalent complications of Sjögren's syndrome, affecting most patients. It significantly affects quality of life and treatment of Sjögren's syndrome is often difficult and unsatisfactory. Pilocarpine and carvimilin are muscarinic cholinergic agonists that have been used to treat Sjogren's syndrome. Whether oral pilocarpine can relieve dry eye symptoms in patients with Sjogren's syndrome remains to be investigated and opinions differ. So, this research tries to specifically explore this problem.
- Participant
