- Title
- Phthalate exposure and carotid atherosclerosis: protocol for a systematic review and meta-analysis
- Review Question
- Is phthalate exposure associated with a higher risk of carotid atherosclerosis (or carotid subclinical atherosclerosis)?
- Study Type Included
- The following studies will be included: prospective and retrospective cohort studies, case-control, and cross-sectional studies.
- Condition Being Studied
- Atherosclerosis has been classified as a chronic inflammatory condition and has been characterized by the thickening of the arteries walls and loss of their elasticity. The carotid artery is one of the most common locations, and it has been the ideal site for ultrasound evaluation. Carotid atherosclerosis and carotid plaques have been associated with higher prevalence and risk of cardiovascular diseases, such as coronary heart disease (CHD) and stroke.
- Participant
- We will include studies analyzing the general population, including children, adolescents, and adults. We will also include patients with diabetes mellitus type 2, obesity, overweight, hypertension, dyslipidemia, or patients with another cardiometabolic disease.
- Animal
- Human Disease Modelled
- Intervention
- Studies must provide information on urinary concentrations of phthalate metabolites and further categorize them into tertiles, quartiles, quintiles, or continuous variables.
- Comparator Control
- Participants in the lowest group of exposure (tertiles, quartiles, or quintiles). Participants with the lowest concentrations of phthalate exposure.
- Main Outcome
- Carotid atherosclerotic plaques and carotid Intima-Media Thickness (cIMT). Measures of effect The effect estimator should be provided as odds-ratio (OR), relative risk (RR), hazard ratio (HR), or linear regression coefficients
- Outcome Measure
- Additional Outcome
- Not others outcomes will be included.
