- Title
- Metabolic Effects of Acute Synephrine Intake Before Exercise: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis
- Review Question
- What are the metabolic effects of acute synephrine intake before exercise?
- Study Type Included
- Only randomized controlled trials that use a cross-over design to examine the effectiveness of synephrine supplementation compared to a placebo group will be included in the review.
- Condition Being Studied
- Synephrine is a naturally occurring alkaloid found in citrus fruits, such as bitter orange (Citrus aurantium), as well as in other plants. It has been gaining attention in the health and fitness communities due to its potential effects on exercise performance and weight loss. Research suggests that synephrine may increase metabolic rate and promote fat oxidation, which can lead to weight loss. It is also believed to have appetite-suppressing effects, which may help to reduce overall calorie intake. However, it is important to note that the effects of synephrine on weight loss and exercise performance are not fully understood and more research is needed to confirm its efficacy and safety.
- Participant
- The review will include studies that examine the metabolic effects of synephrine when taken before exercise, involving healthy, physically active individuals between the ages of 18 and 40 who engage in exercise or sports for recreational purposes. Studies involving individuals with chronic illnesses and those outside of this population will be excluded.
- Animal
- Human Disease Modelled
- Intervention
- Only randomized controlled trials examining the acute metabolic responses to synephrine supplementation prior to exercise will be included in the review. Studies that involve the co-administration of synephrine with additional nutritional supplements or that do not have a randomized controlled design will be excluded from this scope.
- Comparator Control
- The review will include studies that have both intervention and placebo groups. Studies with other designs or those that involve multiple interventions, as well as those that do not have a placebo group, will be excluded.
- Main Outcome
- Studies examining the metabolic responses during the post-exercise recovery period of individuals who received synephrine supplementation prior to an exercise intervention will be considered within the scope of the review. The following are the key outcome measurements pre-planned for the meta-analysis; -Fat Oxidation -Carb Oxidation -Energy Expenditure -Respiratory Exchange Ratio -Diastolic Blood Pressure -Systolic Blood Pressure -Mean Arterial Pressure -Pulse Pressure -Resting Heart Rate -Heart Rate Mean Measures of effect To determine the effect of acute synephrine intake before exercise on the main outcomes of fat oxidation, carbohydrate oxidation, energy expenditure, respiratory exchange ratio, diastolic blood pressure, systolic blood pressure, mean arterial pressure, pulse pressure, resting heart rate, and heart rate mean, various effect measures can be used. For fat and carbohydrate oxidation, the effect measure can be the standardized mean difference (SMD) between synephrine and placebo groups. For energy expenditure, the effect measure can be the mean difference (MD) in calories or the SMD between synephrine and placebo groups. For respiratory exchange ratio, the effect measure can be the MD or SMD between synephrine and placebo groups. For blood pressure measures (diastolic, systolic, and mean arterial pressure), the effect measure can be the MD or SMD between synephrine and placebo groups. For pulse pressure, the effect measure can be the MD or SMD between synephrine and placebo groups. For resting heart rate and heart rate mean, the effect measure can be the MD or SMD between synephrine and placebo groups.
