- Title
- Auricular therapy for hypertension
- Review Question
- To evaluate the evidence for the effectiveness and safety of auricular therapy for hypertension.
- Study Type Included
- All randomized controlled trials (RCTs) investigating the use of auricular therapy in the treatment of hypertension will be eligible for inclusion.
- Condition Being Studied
- Blood pressure (BP) is an important common modifiable risk factor for cardiovascular disease. Hypertension is defined as values >= 140mmHg SBP and/or >=90mmHg DBP. Overall the prevalence of hypertension appears to be around 30-45% of the general population, with a steep increase with ageing. In patients with uncomplicated hypertension, ACEI or ARBs, calcium channel blockers and thiazide diuretics are all suitable first-line antihypertensive drugs. However, few drug therapies specifically target treatment-resistant hypertension.
- Participant
- All adult patients (18 years and older, no upper age limit) with a diagnosis of hypertension will be considered for this review. We will consider Guidelines for the Diagnosis and Management of Hypertension in Adults 2016 and 2013 ESH/ESC Guidelines for the Management of Arterial Hypertension and The Seventh Report of the Joint National Committee on Prevention, Detection, Evaluation, and Treatment of High Blood Pressure: the JNC 7 Report for the Clinical Diagnosis of Hypertension and the Management of patients with Hypertension.

- Intervention
- Auricular therapy includes acupressure, acupuncture, electroacupuncture, laser acupuncture, moxibustion, and bloodletting in the auricle. The interventions should therefore include: Auricular acupressure, which is stimulating the acupuncture points by applying pressure using fingers, knuckles, or dull objects like magnet beads or vaccaria seeds. Auricular acupuncture, in which needles are used for the stimulation of the auricle. Electroacupuncture: a method in which small electrical currents are applied to needles which have been inserted at specific acupuncture points. Laser acupuncture, which is a method that stimulates auricular acupuncture points by applying laser light. Auricular moxibustion, which involves the stimulation of specific auricular points with heat generated by burning dried mugwort leaves. Auricular bloodletting, which uses specific instruments like lancets to stick onto specific auricular points. Specific instructions and durations of the treatments are not limited.
- Comparator Control
- Routine treatment, no intervention, sham auricular therapy control.
- Main Outcome
- BP before and after treatment. Magnitude of BP change between baseline and post-intervention.
- Outcome Measure
- Additional Outcome
- Efficacy rate.
- Study Method
- Intervention, Systematic review
