Title
Comparison on the Effectiveness of different Treatment modalities for Acanthosis Nigricans: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis
Review Question
Among patients diagnosed with Acanthosis Nigricans , What is the most effective treatment for Acanthosis Nigricans compared to tretinoin ?
Study Type Included
Randomized controlled trials (RCTs).
Condition Being Studied
Acanthosis Nigricans(AN) is a skin condition that manifests as thickened hyperpigmented plaques with irregular borders. It commonly affects intertriginous areas of the body, such as the neck and axillae[1].It is associated with insulin resistance, diabetes mellitus, or the use of certain medications such as glucocorticoids and oral contraceptives.Different autoimmune disorders like SLE, Sjogren's syndrome, scleroderma or Hashimoto's thyroiditis have been also linked to acanthosis nigricans[2]. While therapy focuses on treating the underlying cause, cosmetic treatment of acanthosis nigricans lesions is usually patients’ primary concern[3]. Various therapies have been introduced for the treatment of AN. Local options include topical retinoids, topical vitamin D analogs, urea, chemical peels, and different types of laser. Systemic agents such as oral retinoids, metformin, and rosiglitazone can also be used for AN plaques. Although different therapeutic modalities have shown improvement, an optimal approach to treatment remains unclear[4]. The aim of our study is to compare the effectiveness of different treatment modalities for Acanthosis Nigricans.
Participant
All age groups diagnosed with Acanthosis Nigricans (AN) of the neck, mild to moderate severity were included.
Animal
Human Disease Modelled
Intervention
Urea , Fractional 1550-nm erbium fiber laser , fractional carbon dioxide laser , glycolic acid , chemical peeling , Trichloroacetic acid , salicylic acid, and fractional CO2 laser.
Comparator Control
Tretinoin
Main Outcome
-To evaluate severity Acanthosis Nigricans Area and Severity Index (ANASI) score were used. -To express treatment efficacy using Melanin (M) indices and erythema (E) indices , and The narrowband reflectance spectrophotometer (Mexameter MX18) -To evaluate overall success rate The investigator's global evaluation (IGE) and participant's global evaluation (PGE) scale were used.
