Title
Serotonin, oxytocin and arginine vasopressin as biomarkers of aggressive behavior in patients with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD): a Systematic Review
Review Question
Is there an association between the plasma levels of biological markers (oxytocin, arginine-vasopressin and serotonin) and measures of aggressiveness in individuals with ASD, with the severity of the clinical presentation?
Study Type Included
Inclusion criteria: a) original articles that evaluated individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder, no age restriction, no gender distinction, measures of aggressive behavior and aggressiveness, associating them with the biological markers serotonin, oxytocin and arginine-vasopressin b) articles with all types of methodological studies (articles with randomized studies will be prioritized) c) articles in English, Spanish and Portuguese Exclusion criteria: a) review articles, editorials, errata, notes, book chapters, conference abstracts b) c) articles with animal research c) articles with genetic syndromes d)articles with other biological markers d) articles in languages other than English, Spanish and Portuguese
Condition Being Studied
Autism Spectrum Disorder has a prevalence of around 2% of the world population. Symptoms of aggression are present in more than 20% of cases. Dysfunctions involving 5-HT2 receptors (serotonin) in prefrontal cortical regions can result in aggressive behaviors. Oxytocin modulates social behaviors, including expressions of aggression. Single base polymorphisms in Arginine-Vasopressin receptor genes are associated with amygdala activation and deficits in social skills and expression.
Participant
Patients diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (no age limits)
Animal
Human Disease Modelled
Intervention
Plasma levels of biological markers (oxytocin, arginine-vasopressin, serotonin)
Comparator Control
No comparator
Main Outcome
Aggressiveness as primary outcome and clinical severity as secondary outcome Measures of effect The risk of bias is associated with the plasma levels of biomarkers assessed alone or together with primary outcome measures (aggressiveness levels - measured by specific scales) and secondary (clinical severity - measured by specific scale)
