Title
Efficacy of L-arginine and Pycnogenol in the treatment of erectile dysfunction in men: a systematic review and meta-analysis
Review Question
Summarizing clinical trials published to date, we aim to comprehensively summarize and synthesize the evidence on the efficacy of the combination of L-arginine and Pycnogenol in the treatment of male erectile dysfunction.
Study Type Included
Animal experiments, reviews, conference abstracts, Protocols, and studies without full texts were excluded. Other studies that met the inclusion criteria were included.
Condition Being Studied
Erectile dysfunction(ED) refers to the persistent or recurring phallic erectile dysfunction that is difficult to obtain or maintain enough to meet sexual needs. ED is a very common and increasingly serious male disease worldwide, and its risk increases with the increase of age. Hypothyroidism, diabetes, low testosterone levels endocrine dysfunction is largely related to the formation of ED. Compared with the general male population, ED patients are more likely to have premature ejaculation, lower urinary tract symptoms associated with benign prostatic hyperplasia, and an overactive bladder. Therefore, it is necessary to pay attention to erectile function in men. Penile erection is a normal physiological reaction. Nitric oxide is the messenger cell of penile erection. When Pycnogenol is administered in combination with L-arginine, the synergistic effect of NO production can be achieved. We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of clinical trials published to date to comprehensively summarize and synthesize the evidence on the efficacy and safety of L-arginine and Pycnogenol combination therapy in patients with ED.
Participant
Articles that fulfilled the following criteria were selected for this study: RCTs in humans with the parallel group or crossover design. The resveratrol treatment group received resveratrol-containing supplements, and the control group received placebo at similar intervals. The experimental group received a combination of L-arginine and Pycnogenol, while the control group received placebo at similar intervals. Measuring mean changes of outcome indicators, such as IIEF scores (erectile domain), Orgasmic function, Sexual desire, Intercourse satisfaction, Overall satisfaction, and testosterone(T). Data were presented as mean (±standard deviation, SD) or with 95% confidence intervals (95% CI) for the placebo and intervention groups. Involving human RCTs published in the English language. Reviews, conference abstracts, and studies with unavailable full text were excluded.
Animal
Human Disease Modelled
Intervention
Effect of L-arginine combined with Pycnogenol on erectile dysfunction.
Comparator Control
Placebo intervention in patients with erectile dysfunction.
Main Outcome
IIEF scores (erectile domain), Orgasmic function, Sexual desire, Intercourse satisfaction, and Overall satisfaction. Measures of effect We will choose the appropriate effect model based on I². The random-effects model will be applied if there is significant heterogeneity (p<0.05, I²>50%); otherwise, the fixed-effects model will be used. Binary variables are analyzed by using relative risk (RR) and continuous variables are analyzed by using mean difference (MD), and 95% CI is calculated for both. The inspection level is α=0.05.
Outcome Measure
Additional Outcome
Testosterone(T) Measures of effect We will choose the appropriate effect model based on I².
