- Title
- A systematic review of the efficacy of radioactive iodine (131-I) in primary hyperthyroidism
- Review Question
- This study aims to assess efficacy and the optimal dose of radioiodine 131 in the treatment of primary hyperthyroidism.
- Study Type Included
- Randomized Controlled Trials
- Condition Being Studied
- Primary hyperthyroidism and it is described as a pathological condition characterized by elevated levels of thyroid hormone and low or normal levels of thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH). The causes of primary hyperthyroidism are multifactorial and include Graves’ disease, toxic nodular goitre, thyroid adenoma. Currently, the authors are not aware of any systematic review assessing the efficacy of radioactive iodine 131 in primary hyperthyroidism. We propose to conduct a systematic review on the efficacy of radioactive iodine 131 in primary hyperthyroidism.
- Participant
- Individuals undergoing treatment for Graves disease, Toxic multinodular goitre, thyroid adenoma Inclusion criteria - randomized controlled trials on the use of radioactive iodine in various primary hyperthyroidism conditions Exclusion criteria - Studies on the use radioactive iodine in thyroid cancer
- Animal
- Human Disease Modelled
- Intervention
- Intervention- radioactive iodine Exposure- Graves disease, Toxic multinodular goitre, Thyroid adenoma
- Comparator Control
- Surgery Methimazole
- Main Outcome
- The main outcome is to assess whether radioiodine 131 cures primary hyperthyroidism or not and the optimal dose at which this is achieved. Measures of effect Estimating measure will be the relative risk (RR) with their respective 95% confidence interval. Publication bias will be assessed by visual inspection of funnel plot and tested by Egger regression, with significance of p<0.05.
- Outcome Measure
- Additional Outcome
- The time to cure and side effects of radioiodine 131 in primary hyperthyroidism. Measures of effect Estimating measure will be the relative risk (RR) with their respective 95% confidence interval. Publication bias will be assessed by visual inspection of funnel plot and tested by Egger regression, with significance of p<0.05.
