Title
In Vitro Anticancer Effect of Eugenol on Oral Cancer Cell Lines: A Systematic Review
Review Question
Eugenol has been reported to exhibit anticancer activity on several human cancer cells and be able to induce cancer cell death. Several studies also have reported the anticancer activity of eugenol against oral squamous cell carcinoma cell through different pathways. Therefore, the search aimed to answer the following focused question: "How are the anticancer effects of eugenol against oral cancer cell lines on in vitro studies?"
Study Type Included
In vitro (ex vivo) studies
Condition Being Studied
Oral cancer has become a global health problem due to its high incidence and mortality rates. The most common type of oral cancer is oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC). Eugenol is widely used due to its many pharmacological activities. Eugenol is an aromatic compound of the phenol group and has been used as an anticancer agent. Several studies have reported the anticancer activity of eugenol against OSCC through different pathways. Eugenol has been reported to induce cancer cell death, suppress the cancer malignancy process, and inhibit the proliferation and biological activity of cancer cells. However, there is no current review discussing the extent of eugenol anticancer research against oral cancer cell lines on in vitro study. Therefore, the purpose of this systematic review is to discuss the anticancer effects of eugenol against oral cancer cell lines on in vitro studies.
