- Title
- Effectiveness of diacetylmorphine for opioid agonist treatment: A systematic review of patient-reported outcomes
- Review Question
- Is opioid agonist treatment with intravenous diacetylmorphine alone or in combination with another opioid agonist treatment medication more effective in opioid-dependent individuals in improving mental or physical health, reducing drug use (including alcohol), improving quality of life, or social functioning compared to opioid agonist treatment with racemic methadone, levomethadone, buprenorphine, buprenorphine/naloxone, codeine, slow-release morphine, or dihydrocodeine?
- Study Type Included
- We will include randomized controlled trials (RCTs), non-randomized controlled trials (NRS), or observational studies (prospective or retrospective cohort studies or case-control studies). We will exclude qualitative studies, cross-sectional studies, cost-effectiveness studies, mathematical modeling studies, ecological studies, case series, and principally studies with no intervention and control group.
- Condition Being Studied
- Opioid use disorder/opioid dependence. Opioid agonist treatment for improving patient-reported outcomes.
- Participant
- Inclusion: Adults with opioid use disorder/opioid dependence from illegal opioids (as diagnosed using the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) or the International Classification of Diseases (ICD)). Exclusion: Neonatals, children and adolescents (under 18 years of age), pregnant people, only veterans, indigenous people, people with illegal status or people in prison as study population, people who are addicted to (prescribed) opioids as pain-relieving medicine.

- Human Disease Modelled
- Intervention
- Opioid agonist treatment (OAT) with intravenous diacetylmorphine alone or in combination with another OAT medication such as racemic methadone, levomethadone, buprenorphine, buprenorphine/naloxone, codeine, slow-release oral morphine or dihydrocodeine.
- Comparator Control
- Opioid agonist treatment (OAT) with racemic methadone, levomethadone, buprenorphine, buprenorphine/naloxone, codeine, slow-release oral morphine or dihydrocodeine.
- Main Outcome
- Changes in the patient-reported outcomes (PRO) mental health, physical health, drug use incl. alcohol, quality of life, treatment satisfaction, and social functioning from baseline to at least six months follow-up.
