- Title
- The effect of β-glucan on Colitis: A systematic review and meta-analysis of animal studies
- Review Question
- Does β-glucan treatment alleviate the inflammatory reaction in animal colitis models? Context and rationale Currently, several major classes of clinical therapeutic options for colitis involve pharmacological therapy or surgical resection or both. However, the curative effect is often less than ideal and prone to side effects. It is reported that up to 40% of patients do not respond to the current treatment. The biological activity of β-glucan, including its antitumor and antiinfective effects, has been extensively investigated and plays an important role in the alleviation of colitis. Therefore, as a bridge between animal studies and clinical treatments, a meta-analysis is urgently needed to evaluate the efficacy of β-glucan in alleviating colitis to accelerate clinical translation and optimise clinical medication, which could provide clinical guidance for colitis patients.
- Study Type Included
- Inclusion criteria: The treatment group was treated with β-glucan alone. The control group was given saline or no treatment. Exclusion criteria: Other types of studies (e.g., cross-over studies, studies without a separate control group.).
- Condition Being Studied
- Participant
- Animal
- Inclusion criteria: The animals models of colitis without restriction of species, sex, and age and inducers. Exclusion criteria: The animals models of colitis by other therapeutic agents other than β-glucan.
- Human Disease Modelled
- Colitis
- Intervention
- Inclusion criteria: We will include studies using β-glucan in animals with colitis. All forms, timings, frequencies and dosages of treatment with β-glucan are eligible for inclusion. Exclusion criteria: It is not clear about the forms, timings, frequencies and dosages of β-glucan during the treatment.
- Comparator Control
- Inclusion criteria: The control group was given saline or no treatment. Exclusion criteria: The control group without saline or no treatment.
- Main Outcome
- Outcome Measure
- Inclusion criteria: Reported outcome measures and/or degree of inflammation regarding the inflammatory response to colitis. Exclusion criteria: No relevant outcomes reported.
