Title
Advantages of Different Dietary Supplements for Elite Combat Sports Athletes: A Systematic Review and Bayesian Network Meta-Analysis
Review Question
Currently, in elite combat sports athletes, there is a need to add dietary supplements within reasonable limits to improve their performance in sports. However, there are diverse dietary supplements such as caffeine, sodium bicarbonate, beetroot juice, creatine, Beta-alanine, etc., and there is a lack of evidence for the advantages of these different dietary supplements. Therefore, we carried out this systematic review and Bayesian network meta-analysis to explore the advantages of the different dietary supplements for elite combat sports athletes.
Study Type Included
Our study was included in a randomized controlled trial, and the following situations need to be excluded: 1. Conference abstracts published without peer review; 2. Research on repeated publications in unified experiments.
Condition Being Studied
The commonality among various disciplines in combat sports lies in the explosive and high-intensity engagement of the upper and lower extremities. These activities are executed within brief rounds or intervals, with their objectives contingent upon the specific combat sport and its regulations. Prerequisites in combat sports encompass outstanding technical proficiency and substantial repetitions at high intensity, interspersed with moments of lower intensity. Within the domain of combat sports, certain activities permit gripping, throwing, ground fighting, strangulation/neck holds, and joint locks. Examples of these activities include judo, wrestling, and jiu-jitsu. Boxing or striking sports involve the utilization of hands (as in boxing), legs (as in taekwondo), or both hands and legs (as in karate). In some instances, specifically in non-Olympic forms, there is involvement in impact on knee and elbow joints. Currently, various legitimate supplements exist in the realm of combat sports (such as caffeine, sodium bicarbonate, sodium bicarbonate + caffeine, sodium bicarbonate + creatine, Beta-alanine, creatine, beetroot juice, and beetroot extract, among others). Despite the potential advantages these supplements may offer combat sports athletes, public recognition of their benefits remains incomplete. Consequently, we have undertaken this systematic evaluation and network meta-analysis.
Participant
The population of our systematic review was adult elite combat sports athletes (including judo, wrestling, taekwondo, boxing, jiu-jitsu, karate, etc.), while we needed to exclude underage non-elite combat sports athletes.
Animal
Human Disease Modelled
Intervention
The intervention group of our systematic review used different dietary supplements (including caffeine, sodium bicarbonate, beetroot juice, creatine, Beta-alanine, etc.) within a reasonable range and was not limited to use alone.
Comparator Control
Our control groups for this systematic review were those who received a placebo or those who did not receive any supplements.
