Title
Effect of cinnamic acid and natural derivatives on glycemic control in Diabetes Mellitus: a systematic review of preclinical in vivo evidence
Review Question
Do effects of cinnamic acid and its derivatives in diabetic animal experiments help in glycemic control and liver and kidney biomarkers? Context and rationale Studies on the effect of cinnamic acid in the treatment of diabetes have been published in recent years. Even though, the knowledge about its effects is still scarce, which difficults the understanding of its mechanism of action. In addition, a deep and specific meta-analysis of the effect of cinnamic acid over diabetes treatment has yet to be done. Therefore, we believe that this meta-analysis will shed light on the real potential of cinnamic acid as an antidiabetic so that we can consolidate it as a potential medicine for human use.
Study Type Included
Inclusion criteria: In vivo experimental studies are eligible, provided they have a diabetic control group and a diabetic group treated with cinnamic acid (controlled studies with separate treatment groups) Exclusion criteria: Studies without an untreated diabetic group as a control
Condition Being Studied
Participant
Animal
Inclusion criteria: We will only include rodents (rat and mouse) as an animal model of diabetes. There will be no restriction on the model of induced diabetes. Exclusion criteria: Clinical, in vitro and ex vivo studies will be excluded from the review.
Human Disease Modelled
Diabetes mellitus type 1 or type 2
Intervention
Inclusion criteria: We will include studies using cinnamic acid and derivatives from plant extracts, as well from commercial laboratories. We will include treatments using cinnamic acid and derivatives in different concentrations, routes of administration, frequency of treatment and time. Exclusion criteria: Studies in which it was not clear the presence of cinnamic acid and derivatives during the treatment.
Comparator Control
Inclusion criteria: Experimental studies with control (diabetic animals) and treatment (diabetic animals treated with cinnamic acid and derivatives) groups. Exclusion criteria: Studies with absence of one of these groups.
Main Outcome
Outcome Measure
Inclusion criteria: Blood glucose levels, glycated hemoglobin and insulin resistance parameters will be considered for this study. Exclusion criteria: Studies that report other parameters such as weight, oxidative stress, inflammatory and histological parameters, but that do not present blood glucose levels will not be considered for this review.
