- Title
- What Happens When Myopia Control Stops? A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis of Myopia Progression after Cessation of Atropine
- Review Question
- What are the consequences of discontinuing atropine-based myopia control treatment, regardless of the reason, such as atropine, or combination therapies involving atropine.
- Study Type Included
- Randomized controlled trials(RCTs), Pseudo-RCTs, cohort and case-control studies.
- Condition Being Studied
- Myopia represents a significant and escalating public health issue, particularly in East Asia, where it has reached a pandemic level. By the year 2020, approximately 2.5 billion individuals are projected to be impacted by myopia. While various treatment methods have shown effectiveness, the presence of a rebound effect following therapy raises concerns about the true benefits of each treatment approach.
- Participant
- Inclusion criteria: - Studies with data associated with axial length or refractive error measurement - Studies enrolled participants with myopia who received the atropine-based myopia treatment for at least six months and then ceased the intervention more than 1 month - Patients who discontinue myopia control treatments, regardless of the reason, with no restriction to the age Exclusion criteria: - Case report, case series - Studies that involved participants with congenital or severe ophthalmological conditions or surgical history that may influence the outcome - Studies with overlapping participants
