Title
Association of arsenic with adverse pregnancy outcomes/intrauterine growth restriction: A systematic review and meta-analysis
Review Question
Effects of arsenic exposure during pregnancy on pregnancy outcomes:A systematic review and meta-analysis
Study Type Included
Subjects must be women and female rats exposed (by any means) to arsenic and arsenic compounds (As, As2O3, As2O5) during pregnancy (at any stage). Inclusion criteria: (1) Outcome measures included low birth weight (BW<2500g), (2) Small for gestational age or intrauterine growth restriction. The exclusion criteria for literatures are as follows: (1) Literatures with sample size less than 30 should be excluded; (2) Literature from population epidemiological investigations, including retrospective or prospective cohort studies and case-control studies, should be excluded if the study subjects have been observed for more than 1 year; (3) Review literature is also excluded.
Condition Being Studied
Arsenic (As), a highly toxic metal-like element that is widely present in the Earth's environment, has been shown to easily cross the placental barriers of humans and animals. Due to changes in physiological status, maternal metabolism is strong, so exposure to arsenic environment is more likely to increase the risk of adverse pregnancy outcomes. At present, a considerable number of studies at home and abroad have focused on the effects of arsenic on human health, but there are few literatures focusing on the characteristics of arsenic exposure in pregnant women.
