Title
Effect of Arsenic on the Risk of Gestational Diabetes Mellitus: Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis
Review Question
The purpose of this systematic review and meta-analysis is to comprehensively review the newly published relationship between arsenic and gestational diabetes.
Study Type Included
Cross section, case control, cohort, etc.
Condition Being Studied
Gestational diabetes is associated with a variety of adverse consequences of the mother and fetus, including pre eclampsia, premature delivery, congenital malformations, fetal intrauterine death, macrosomia, polyhydramnios, and increased likelihood of neonatal hypoglycemia. In addition, GDM mothers and their offspring have a higher risk of type 2 diabetes (DM2) and cardiovascular disease. Recent evidence suggests that arsenic may be a risk factor for its development, but debate still exists.
Participant
Pregnant women of different gestational ages have been exposed to arsenic in tap water, food, environment, blood, and hair. Inclusion criteria: The study included the RR estimation of the relationship between arsenic exposure in pregnant women and diabetes in pregnancy (i.e. odds ratio [OR] or hazard ratio [HR] and 95% confidence interval [CI]); Research that reported appropriate information for calculating RR estimates is also included; The research design includes cross sectional, case control, cohort, etc. Exclusion: case report and case series, etc.
Animal
Human Disease Modelled
Intervention
A case-control study and a prospective cohort study were conducted to assess the impact of maternal arsenic exposure on the risk of diabetes during pregnancy. For each defined result log, the relative risk, size of merge effects (using fixed and random effects models), heterogeneity, and publication bias surveys will be evaluated. Due to the fact that traditional well-known risk factors for GDM, such as maternal age, obesity, lifestyle, and race, cannot clearly explain the prevalence of this disease during pregnancy, people are increasingly interested in the hypothesis that exposure to some environmental pollutants, such as arsenic, may play a role in the development of GDM. Arsenic is a widely present natural pollutant, with over 100 million people exposed to it for a long time, mainly through concentrations exceeding the World Health Organization guidelines limit of 10 μ G/L of contaminated drinking water. This metal seam to lead to pancreatic beta cell dysfunctional trough different mechanisms including oxidative stress, interferences in signal transduction, gene expression and disruption of the growth hormone/insulin like growth factor axis.
Comparator Control
Some of the included studies included a non-exposed pregnant population.
